Labuche Peak (6119m) is situated close to the Khumbu glacier in the Everest region. It is one of the most popular trekking peaks in the Nepalese Himalaya. Labuche peak climbing is attractive, offering a variety of existing routes and a wide scope for opening new ones, with some technical challenges..
Labuche peak has two summits, the East and West ones, with elevations of 6119m and 6145m respectively. A continuous ridge connects the two, but it is a long route that requires a considerable altitude loss and gain. The East Peak is recognized as a trekking peak, whereas the West one is known as an expedition peak. The dark triangle of the rocky East face rises over the moraines of the Khumbu Glacier to a spectacular skyline, forming the South ridge. Labuche East is reached by descending to a marked notch and then climbing steep snowy slopes to the top. The summit offers a great view of Mt. Everest, Mt. Ama Dablam etc., and a 360° Himalayan panorama that includes all the important peaks of the Khumbu Valley.
Most frequently, the mountain is climbed on the summit ridge only as far as a subsidiary snow summit, South–East of the true peak. The first ascent of Labuche East was made on April 25 ,1984 although, it is possible that the summit was reached before but not recorded. To climb Labuche East, one follows the Everest base camp route to Gorak Shep, continuing to Kalapattar, at 5545m, a route that offers great views of the Everest and good acclimatization. Alternatively, one can follow the Gokyo valley to cross the Chola pass, a route that is also good for acclimatization. Which ever route, it requires a base camp at Dzongla and a high camp at 5300m, either by a lake or a little higher near a pass. This higher camp provides the best view of the Labuche peak as well as of the Everest, Lhotse, Nupste, Makalu, Ama Dablam, Khangtenga and Tawache peaks.
