Mt. Manaslu (8156m), the eighth highest mountain in the world, was successfully first climbed in 1952 by a Japanese expedition team, although the ascension was tried before without success. In 1950, during a trek around the Manaslu, Jimmy Roberts and his friend photographed the mountain and these photos served as the survey of Japanese expedition. The name of this mountain comes from the Sanskrit world “Manasa” that means “intellect” as per most common translations.
The around the Manaslu trek, also known as the as the Larke Pass trekking, similarly as the Tsum valley circuit, takes place in the mountain range situated just East of the Annapurna region. This trail traverses two conservation areas, the Manaslu Conservation Area and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project. It has been opened to foreign trekkers in 1991 and is considered as a controlled trekking area. Before it leads to the Larke La and then down to join with the around the Annapurna trail, the trek can lead to the Manaslu base camp. This trek offers pristine mountain views, visit of lush valleys and discovery of various cultural heritage. Also it provides spectacular views along the border between Nepal and Tibet. Trekking in this region requires special trekking permits through a government registered trekking agency as it is a controlled area. Normally March, April, May, and September, October, November are the best moments for accomplishing this trek.
