Muktinath Pilgrim Treks

Muktinath lies in the district of Mustang and is situated about 18 kms northeast of Jomsom at an altitude of about 3800m. The plain of the Khali Gandhaki below is famous for the shaligrams (fossils).

Muktinath is one of the sacred places of worship for the Hindus in the Himalayan ranges of Nepal. After the temple of Pashupatinath in Kathmandu, this is the most sacred Hindu site. Known by both the Hindus and the Bhuddists, this shrine attracts pilgrims during the months of May to November. The main shrine is a pagoda shaped temple dedicated to Vishnu. This is the 106th sacred Muktichhetra (assured of salvation) among 108 sacred places of Vaishnavs, where Vishnu got free from the curse of Sati. A  Jwaladevi, a divine flame, is continuously burning since thousands of year. Hindus come to Muktinath to bathe in the 108 water springs shaped as cows heads, while  Buddhists come to pay homage at a shrine enclosing an eternal blue flame. In both cases, pilgrims take bath in holy water spouts to purify their bodies before visiting the temples for worship.
