La légendaire région de l’Everest est située au nord-est du Népal, dans la partie supérieure du district de Solukhumbu. L’Everest (8848m) est la plus haute montagne du Népal, parmi les huit sommets népalais de plus de 8000m, et est la plus haute montagne au monde. En plus du trek de l’Everest, il y a plein d’autres sommets à escalader dans la région d’où les montagnards peuvent s’offrir des vues imprenables des quatre 8000m de la région, incluant le Mt Everest, les Mt. Lhotse (8516m), Cho-Oyu (8201m) and Makalu (8463m). Glacier Family Treks and Expeditions propose des défis sur les chemins de la région. Ici, les voies sont à plus haute altitude et les trekkeurs passent plus de temps en altitude dans cette région du Khumbu qui est reconnue comme la patrie d’origine de l’ethnie Sherpa.
La partie supérieure du Khumbu est protégée par le Sagarmatha National Park et a été désignée comme héritage mondial en 1979 pour sa nature et sa vie sauvage. Le parc a une superficie totale de 1148 km carrés. Sa végétation passe du sapin, genévrier, pin, rhododendron, bouleau, “hemlet”, arbustes protégés, à des plantes alpines comme l’edelweiss poussant sur les rochers et dans la neige. Le Khumbu est également riche en animaux sauvages comme le cerf musqué, le “choral”, le “tahr”, le “yellow et red-billed”, une grande variété de faisans. La région doit beaucoup à Sir Adman Hilary qui par ses dons a financé l’éducation et la santé des populations locales. Namche Bazaar et les villages de Khumjung, Khunde et Thame sont des habitats traditionnels Sherpa de la région. Les festivals de Mani Rimdu, Gyalpo Losar and Saga Dawa sont des événements majeurs pour la population locale. Pour assister à l’une des ces manifestations, le monastère de Tyangboste (3870m, le plus haut monastère bouddhiste au monde) est un lieu privilégié, de même que la montagne sacrée de Khumbila.
